You might have noticed in our logo it says "Since 1897", that's because The Greenwood was originally built on Chalk Mountain, TX, which is located between Glen Rose and Hico where it served as a General Mercantile store. The picture below was taken in 1900 and was provided by Somervell Co. Historical Commission. It shows The Greenwood, known then as "Howard and Underwood General Mercantile" in "downtown" Chalk Mountain with some of the local folks.

The Greenwood spent the next 20 or 30 years on Chalk Mountain serving as the general store. Around the mid 1920's or 1930's, The Greenwood was loaded up on wooden skids that were attached to horses and pulled the 13 long miles to its new home on the square in Glen Rose. Over the next 70 years, The Greenwood served as a cleaners, barbershop, and mercantile shop (that we know of). By 2002, it had been abandoned and was feeling the tightening noose of a growing society building up around it and it was determined that the building would either have to be demolished or moved.
In 2002, Jennifer Miller bought this ailing building and had it moved to Bluff Dale, TX to her property where it sat for a few years. In 2006 the building was moved again about 1000 feet to its new and current home a 208 N. Greenwood Street. At this point the building itself needed some serious TLC and new life was breathed into The Greenwood. It was renovated, while maintaining its historic presence, into what it is today. Once completed, it was appropriately named "The Greenwood" after the street on which it sits.

The Greenwood Today

Today, the Greenwood is a place to kick up your heels, listen to some good Texas music and have and ice cold drink.  If you want to dance, this is the place to do it!  We have two dance floors, one inside and the other outside.  We have a bar that serves a good selection of beer and wine (no hard drinks) as well as soft drinks and water.  We are a private club, but membership is free!  Whether your riding your Harley down 377 or out for a cruise in your convertible, I guarantee you'll enjoy your time at the Greenwood.  Stop in, have a drink, and tell us a story!
